NEW YORK

In October 1989, Antoni Clavé spent ten days in New York. The American city became a new source of inspiration. The walls, the sometimes torn or repeated advertising posters, the dripping glue, the dirt, the rough texture, and the graffiti in the subway are reinterpreted by Clavé with the vitality and energy characteristic of his fierce style.

His colour palette is reduced once again, focusing on black and shades of grey. The juxtapositions of muted tones are enhanced by areas of red and blue poured onto the canvas or applied with spray paint. The works are illuminated with white graffiti.

This series of works will be entitled ‘Seen in New York’. Close to urban art, it paints an unexpected portrait of the American metropolis. During the 1990s, Clavé multiplied large formats, whether polyptychs or not. ‘Tríptic per l'Ajuntament’ bears witness to the artist's last creative period. The work, created in 1992 to mark the 1,100th anniversary of Barcelona, is presented exceptionally.
