Alphonse Mucha
In Quest of Beauty
Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech graphic artist and painter who rose to fame in late nineteenth-century Paris with his theatre posters for the actress Sarah Bernhardt — a true superstar of her time — his advertisements and his elegant decorative panels. His work inspired art nouveau just as it was beginning to emerge.
The exhibition followed the development of Mucha's unmistakable graphic style and of the ideas underpinning it, beginning with beauty, the great principle behind his artistic theories and philosophy.
It was arranged in three thematic sections: the first two highlighted his contribution to art nouveau in Paris, while the third turned to the evolution of his art after his return to the Czech lands. In his own words, the mission of the artist is to teach people to love beauty.
