Chagall

Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul-de-Vence, 1985) built a universe of his own through his paintings and writings: a lyrical, poetic and fantastic world in which everything is possible. A world of dreams and colour, in tones that glow — intense colours that bring to life the settings and characters, real or imaginary, that populate his work.

As a young man he settled in Paris, where he came into contact with the avant-gardes of the early twentieth century. His creations were touched by Cubism, Fauvism, Surrealism and Orphism, but his longing for independence kept him apart from these movements: he forged a wholly personal and unique style.

The exhibition traced fifty years of work through the great themes that inspired his life and art: his origins and childhood memories, spirituality and the Bible, the historical upheavals of the twentieth century, literature, flowers and love. As the artist himself said, only one colour gives meaning to life and to art — the colour of love.
