THE SUBCONSCIOUS IS FULL OF SEAWEED
“The first summer of my life, at only three months old, I spent by the sea, and it may be that my
brain unconsciously absorbed the dazzling glare of the sun on the sand, the salty breeze that
carried the smell of seaweed and the tar used on fishing boats pulled up on the shore,
the rhythmic sound of the waves (…)”.
Manuel Vicent
The first section of the exhibition explores Vicent’s relationship with the Mediterranean Sea, from childhood to adolescence. Here we find some of Sorolla’s most luminous paintings of children playing and bathing on the beach, such as Coming Out of the Bath, Boy on the Seashore, Valencia, The Little Sailing Boat, The Bathing Hour, Valencia, and After the Bath, Valencia.
