GLIMPSES OF CHILDHOOD
"I have seen children working in fields, factories, ditches, tunnels, mines and shipbreaking yards. Hundreds of millions of children spend their childhood working and do not have the chance to play, go to school or live in a healthy environment.
Steve McCurry
Through Steve McCurry’s lens, childhood is revealed as a universal language. The children portrayed, though different in ethnicity, dress and traditions, share the same energy, joie de vivre and ability to play even in the most difficult circumstances, often marked by poverty, conflict or extreme conditions. Childhood is not merely a stage of life, but the foundation upon which a society’s future is built. With his humanistic approach, McCurry captures their resilience and their ability to find light even in the most adverse situations. Despite the recognition of fundamental rights established in 1989 by the United Nations, the reality remains complex: according to Save the Children, one in six children still lives in war zones. In many cases, particularly in Asia, McCurry has also documented the phenomenon of child exploitation, with children forced to work instead of studying or playing. Yet an extraordinary vitality always emerges from his images: as in the children playing on a rusty tank, transforming an instrument of death into a playground.
